Thermal Reservoir Geomechanics

Last Course:  Thursday September 12th, 2013.  9:00 - 16:15

Calgary, Alberta

Geomechanical behaviour is a key issue in the performance of recovery processes requiring the injection of fluids at pressures above the reservoir pressure.  Many of these involve the injection of steam or in situ combustion.  This full-day course provides overviews of geomechanics principles and thermal recovery processes with an emphasis on cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) and steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD).  In addition, there is a discussion on caprock integrity, thermal stresses, and process monitoring.  The objective is to expose attendees to geomechanical issues so that they can make informed decisions in their workplace.  Frequent references will be made to case histories.

Caprock Integrity

Last Course:  Friday September 13, 2013.  9:00-12:00   (half day)

Calgary, Alberta

Caprock integrity has become the key issue in determining the maximum operating pressure for recovery processes requiring the injection of fluids above the original reservoir pressure.  This half-day course provides an overview of the issues surrounding the issue of caprock integrity, and provides a specific step-by-step methodology for assessing caprock integrity for any given injection scheme.  An emphasis will be placed on the two most common injection recovery processes used in western Canada:  cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) and steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) although the principles and methods are applicable to other injection schemes.  Frequent references will be made to case histories.
